Marsh and Bay Expeditions: a small sailboat explores a saltmarsh

Dinghy Cruising 2015 Season About Us Logs (with photos!)

"What a mind blowing trip! Words fall short...I've come home changed in some unnamable way." - Brendan, Philadelphia

bow waveThis year we're offering exciting full immersion programs for adults (and minors accompanied by a parent/guardian), embarking primarily from Westport, Massachusetts*. Participants sail and camp in boats with just one or at most two others, making this a great activity to share. Season calendar below.

For all trips, registration closes at 6PM on the immediately preceding Tuesday or once full, whichever is first. Four boats + two instructors = availability is limited!

camp ashore Westport Weekend - An introduction to the basic skills of handling small boats on the picturesque Westport River*. Saturday morning we begin to explore the estuary, practicing rowing, tiller steering and boat safety. In the afternoon we hoist sails and learn to sail together. By evening we anchor the boats off a beach, rig cockpit tents for sleeping, and check the weather and predicted currents. Sunday morning we study coastwise navigation, and embark on a mini-cruise. Dates marked with an ≈ will be geared towards gaining skills for more challenging circumstances.

at anchorEight Day Voyage - A coastal cruise, ideal for those who have either taken another course with us or have other dinghy sailing experience, though greenhorns are welcome. The first day of this trip is spent refreshing returning sailors, getting any novices oriented, and considering our options for a weeklong trip given forecast winds and currents. Once the group reaches consensus on a sailing plan and boat assignments, anything is possible! The first of these trips will begin in Westport, MA, and the second—if all goes well—will end there. Whether they are each round trips or one-way coastal journeys depends.*

*If you're coming from (or going to) points west or south of Rhode Island, book trips between July 18th and the end of August—if enough down-coast sailors sign on by July 14, we may begin and/or end those trips at the outer reaches of NYC commuter rail: the lower Connecticut River or the East End of Long Island.
